Teacher Biographies

AElfred of Chester

Baron AElfred of Chester is a gentleman at Her Majesty Elizabeth's court and has traveled on the business of the Queen in the Lowlands, France, the Holy Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire. He currently holds a post on the Border.

C. Allen Reed is a law enforcement officer with over twenty-five years experience. He is a firearms, baton and police combatives instructor for a Federal agency. He is a State of Illinois certified defensive tactics instructor. Allen also holds the rank of Kaiden (equivalent of 7th dan) in Paracombatives Jujutsu. Allen studies and recreates the sword arts of Medieval and Renaissance Europe. He is a past member of the Chicago Swordplay Guild. Currently he is Headmaster for the Gallowglass Academy. In the SCA Allen has been authorized in armored combat for close to twenty years and in rapier combat for almost fifteen years. Allen was the first kingdom marshal of fence in the Middle Kingdom. Allen has taught at almost every KWAR since the first one was held in the Midrealm in 1994.

Aeron Harper

Don Aeron Harper of Ansteorra (David Biggs) has been involved in martial arts for over 14 years. He has spent the last 8 of those years studying and interpreting historical fight manuals, including those written by Saviolo, diGrassi, Capo Ferro, Marozzo, and dall'Agocchie. In the SCA he wears the White Scarf of Ansteorra, and mundanely he is the Rector (instructor) of the Houston chapter of Tattershall School of Defence, a non-profit organization dedicated to the study and instruction of the Western Martial Arts from the 14th thru the 19th centuries. As such, David has traveled to several states and into Canada teaching what he knows of this art. His primary interests are the Rapier and Sidesword, with just a smattering of quarterstaff. He currently lives in the Barony of the Stargate (Houston, TX).

Don Ansgar von Aachen (William Small) has been an SCA member since early 1980's. He has served in the marshallate (as well as other offices) ever since. He is a former and current Kingdom Rapier Marshal for Ansteorra. He lives in the Shire of Graywood in Ansteorra.

Antonia Bianca Santiago da Lagos

Doña Antonia Bianca Santiago da Lagos (Dawn Rummel) joined the SCA in 1989 and has been a member of the Order of the White Scarf for 10 years. After many years spent studying the worthy art of rapier fighting, she has over the past few years developed a deep interest in the gentler arts of poetry and performance. She is currently the Titled Bard of Ansteorra, Bryn Gwlad, and Brad Leah. She lives in the Barony of the Steppes, Ansteorra (Dallas, Texas).

Ari Uisnigh

Mistress Ari Uisnigh (Jocelyn Hinkle) is an experienced dancer and rapier fighter with 14 years of middle eastern dance, and 12 years of SCA fencing in both the Outlands and Ansteorra. Outside the SCA, Ari has trained in gymnastics (balance and tumbling) and Tai Chi (3 years). She has recently relocated from Ansteorra to Atenveldt and now lives in the Barony March of Mons Tonitrus (Sierra Vista, AZ).

Balthasar Charon

Balthasar Charon (Jherek Swanger) has been in the SCA since 1986, originally in Bryn Gwlad (Austin, TX). He moved to An Tir in '92, and has been a member of the OWS for five years. For the last few years he has been translating and interpreting Italian fencing manuals, including Viggiani, Manciolino, Capo Ferro, Agrippa, and others. Don Benedict Ashton (Joe Rummel) has been a rapier fighter for 16 years and a WSA for the past 2.5 years. He has been actively studying period and just post-period clothing for the majority of this time. Benedict holds Ansteorra's Grant level arts award, the Iris, for his work in costuming. Benedict has made clothing, boots, shoes and swordbelts for a good number of people throughout the SCA, most notably his wife Antonia. Benedict is always willing to discuss various ways of improving the clothing of the SCA and is often willing to share his opinions. He currently lives in the Barony of the Steppes (Dallas, TX).

Brendan McEwan (Dwayne Hope) is a Don with 11 years of fencing experience including time spent training for national fencing competitions. He hails from the Steppes in Ansteorra (Dallas, TX).

Brian Mac Brand of Darkwood

Iarl Brian Mac Brand of Darkwood, KSCA, OL (Scott Wilson) has been fighting in the SCA for 20 years and has been fencing in the SCA on and off for 10 years. Brian's interest in swordplay spawned the business of Darkwood Armory where he builds and tests rapiers and other weapons. He has studied a large variety of Eastern martial arts and holds instructor ranks in Shotokan, and Cadena de Mano Arnis. Brian runs a small class of longsword, and early period martial enthusiasts, and teaches Modern Combat Techniques based on his training and research. Lately he has been studying the Fabris rapier system with Tomaso Leoni and is a member of the Order of the Seven Hearts. Brian is also a member of the Tattershall School of Defense. He lives in the Shire of Salt Keep, Kingdom of Meridies (Panama City, FL).

Don Brian mac Cael (Brian Stanley) was perhaps the Known World's longest tenured Cadet--he began rapier fighting in AS XXI, received a red scarf AS XXI, and received White Scarf AS XXXIX. He has studied on numerous WSAs. He currently lives in the Kingdom of Ansteorra, Shire of Gate's Edge (Houston, TX).

Brian Thornbird

Earl Sir Brian Thornbird ap Rhys, OL is principal of the Schola Saint George (http://www.scholasaintgeorge.org) and publisher for The Chivalry Bookshelf (http://www.chivalrybookshelf.com). He is extremely active in the Western Martial Arts and SCA communities, making his home just north of Dallas, TX.

Chiara Francesca Arianna d'Onofrio

HL Chiara Francesca Arianna d'Onofrio (Franchesca V. Havas) has taught classes on glovemaking since 1986. She has been making gloves since she was 5. Her first article on gloves was published in 1987 in a SCA newsletter called the It Cometh in the Mail for the Austin branch of the SCA. Her second article was published in the SCA newsletter called The Steppes Letter in Dallas in 1995. Her third article was published in the Spring 2001 SCA publication called Tournaments Illuminated. She currently resides in the Barony of the Steppes, Ansteorra (Dallas, TX). All her research is currently being published at www.glove.org.

Claire Shayhan

Baroness Claire Shayhan (Elizabeth Crouchet), known far and wide as 'Claire the Hair,' has been fencing in the SCA for several years. Raised by sugar gliders, she was taught at an early age to fight for food. Claire began her illustrious SCA career with an out-of-nowhere triumph for the A.S. XIV Miss Bryn Gwald [sic] title. She retired early from the kingdom pageantry circuit, desiring to leave at least some opportunity for other ladies of the court. Suddenly Elvis Presley, in a fit of rage, dragged her onto the waiting UFO as the aliens held the probes expectantly. Somewhere nearby, Bigfoot snickered. She went on to start the Adopt A Don Foundation and now cares for not just one, but two fortunate white scarves. She is currently the "control" case for Don Robert's Fencing School and Maternity Ward.

Ld. Corvin di Fenarro (Kevin Wilson) is a member of Tattershall School of Defence and a rapier fighter of 3 years, cadet to Don Aeron Harper. He has been studying period swordplay for 2 years. He has read Capo Ferro, Giganti, Di Grassi, Saviolo, d'all Agocchie, and Marozzo. He lives in the Barony of Stargate, Kingdom of Ansteorra (Houston, TX).

Delphina des Champeaux

HL Delphina de Champeaux (Ledonna Wallace) has been in the SCA for over 14 years now and has been involved in rapier combat for much of that time. She lives in the Barony of Loch Soillier (Pasadena, TX) in the Kingdom of Ansteorra. She is starting her 15th year as a professional educator in the Texas public school system and has been a freelance lecturer for the past 10 years. She has taught at all levels except 2nd grade and has no idea how she has missed that one.

Gabriela d'Avila

Gabriela D’Avila (Mary Curtis), originally from Ansteorra and currently hailing from the West, has studied fencing for 3 years within and outside the SCA. Over the past 6 years, she has worked on locating Destreza-related texts, creating a Spanish-English glossary of 16th-18th century fencing terminology, and translating sections of fencing manuals. To share this information, she created and maintains the site La Verdadera Destreza, soon to be updated as the Destreza Research and Translation Project ( http://www.destreza.us).

She recently worked in Spain for 2 ½ months and took advantage of that time to study classical saber and locate more texts. She is currently working on a translation of a text from 1702 for eventual publication. In the Fencing Guild of the West, she holds the rank of Journeyman, and she is a member of the Tattershall School of Defence (www.tattershall.org), an organization dedicated to promoting the study and instruction of historical swordplay. Mundanely, she is also a graduate student in Spanish literature.

Giovanni di Fiamma

Giovanni di Fiamma is a Florentine physician, polymath, and scholar of defense. His recent studies have led him north, to Milan, the Germanies, and the Confederation. In the SCA, he has served both the Caidan and Trimarian Crowns as Queen's Champion, as well as a term as Deputy Society Marshal for Rapier. He is a Companion of the Order of Duellist, Caid, and of the Order of the White Scarf, Trimaris. He lives in Castlemere, Trimaris.

Dr. Bill Ernoehazy, Jr. is a board certified specialist in the field of Emergency Medicine and a retired Naval Officer. He has studied fencing for over 20 years, is a member of the Tattershall School of Defense, and has trained in aikido as well as medieval and modern close quarter combatives. Other interests include marksmanship (pistols and rifles), computers, science fiction and its fandom, blogging, and space exploration. Following Brust, he hopes to get some sleep Real Soon Now.

Henri Molineaux

Don Henri Molineaux (Jeff Girard) "found" the SCA during the Spring of 1990. A little over a year from his first tournament, Don Hans Durrmast von der Wanderlust asked him to be his cadet, which Henri eagerly accepted. He spent the next seven-odd years fulfilling the curse that Tivar had pronounced on Mouse until Her Majesty, Gladwyn of Aylesford, turned him to the Dark Side in the Spring of 1998. Currently, Henri is not very active at this time due to his recovery from major neck surgery; however, he longs for the day when he can again pursue his passion of Rapier. He also lays claim to the title of “Don Most Likely to Set Off Airport Metal Detectors.”

He was one of the leading trainers for his company¹s Rancho Cordova, CA, help desk location. In addition to training over 100 help desk employees, he also trained new hires in the help desk software and was sent to other help desk locations to "train the trainers" for those locations. In addition, he frequently taught basic - advanced Cloak and Case/Florentine classes in previous Academy of the Rapier events.

John Malkin aMalkin

John Malkin aMalkin (John Railing) is from the Shire of Mynydd Seren in the Middle Kingdom. He started out as a heavy fighter in A.S.X and was a marshal for most of that time. He have been a rapier fighter since the first authorizations were done in the Middle Kingdom by Don Tivar some dozen years ago and rapier marshal for most of the years since then. He taught a class on fencing and training disabled fighters at the first KWAR in Chicago. He has had to learn a few tricks along the way to enable him to overcome a physical handicap in fighting. This class is looking at them in a systematic way rather than just isolated bits learned over the years.

Kate Maunsel (Cathy Snell) has been a fencer for 9 years and a costumer for 11. She is a COWS (Provost of the Academie d'Espee) and holds the Atlantian Order of the Pearl (Kingdom A&S award). She lives in the Barony of Windmaster's Hill, Kingdom of Atlantia.

Margalit Medicus

Lady Margalit Medicus (Companion of the Cavendish Knot) is an experienced rapier fighter, both in the SCA (8 years), and modern fencing (4 years). She is also a family medicine physician at the University of Minnesota, and Northshield Principality Chirurgeon. As the "Minion of Leechcraft," Lady Margalit has been advising the Midrealm and Northshield Rapier Marshals in issues of health and safety in rapier for as long as she can remember. She currently resides in the Barony of Nordskogen, Midrealm.

Honorable Lady Myfanwy ferch Eifion (Robyn Bainter) began dancing over 10 years ago. She began teaching people to dance a few years later, knowing that the best way to learn was to teach. She has a particular fondness for the dancing that was done in Englad but she will dance any dances that somebody will teach her. She lives in the Barony of Bryn Gwlad, Kingdom of Ansteorra (Austin, TX).

Pachomius OneShoe

Don Pachomius Ones shoe (Puck Curtis) has been practicing historical fencing for over 12 years and has been researching Destreza (Spanish Fencing) since 1994. Recently, he traveled to Spain with his wife, Lady Gabriela De Avila (Mary Curtis), where he taught a class on Italian fencing in Santander and participated in a training day in Madrid with the historical fencing association of Spain, the Asociacion Espanola de Esgrima Antigua (AEEA).

Puck works with his wife in the translation and interpretation of Destreza texts and assists in maintaining the Destreza Translation and Research Project (DTRP) web site. This web site is dedicated to translating and distributing information related to the art of Spanish fencing. http://www.destreza.us/

Puck currently teaches Italian and Spanish rapier with the Davis Period Fencing Club, in Davis California and is also a member of the Tattershall School of Defense, the Back Yard Fencing Association, and the Scuola Magistrale di Sacramento.

Percy Aldridge has been fighting rapier in the SCA for 10 years, and has been a member of the OWS in Atlantia (Provost of the Academie d'Espee) for 4 years. He has been actively teaching Rapier in Atlantia for over 5 years. Percy is currently living in the Barony of Windmaster's Hill, Kingdom of Atlantia.

Pieter Rausch

Don Pieter Rausch (Peter Wohlers) has been fencing for 13 years. He is accredited by the Academy d'Arms International and the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association. Pieter also has been involved in Historical Combat for many years and holds the Award of the White Scarf of Ansteorra. Additionally Pieter has helped choreograph dueling scenes in a number of productions of Shakespeare and other works for the stage. He currently lives in the Barony of Bjornsborg, Ansteorra (San Antonio, TX).

Don Robert MacPharland, OP (David Whitford) has many years of liaison work helping with rapier activities at multiple wars (20+ at last count), plus two years as KRM, 10+ years as a deputy KRM, 2+ years as a Society deputy. He has worked with several kingdom rapier marshals on rules issues for inter-kingdom events. He lives in the Barony of the Stargate (Houston, TX).

Robin of Gilwell

Robin of Gilwell, and Elizabethan nobleman, has been fencing in the SCA since 1978. He is the fifth White Scarf, a Pelican, a Laurel, and a Baron. Six of his cadets have become White Scarves, two have become Pelicans, and one has become a knight. He is a strange visitor from another time who came to Ansteorra with powers and abilities far different from those of modern men. Robin, who can change the course of bardic circles, bear steel in his good right hand, and who disguised as Jay Rudin, a mild-mannered professor for a great metropolitan university, fights the never-ending battle for truth, honor, and the Ansteorran Way. He currently lives in the Barony of the Steppes (Dallas, TX).

Ryan Dollas Unben (Ryan O'Connor) has been fencing in the SCA for approximately 12 years. He has been honored with several fighting awards including his White Scarf, which was given to him at Estrella XVIII (Feb. 2003). He was commander of the Aten-Rapier forces for Estrella XIX (Feb. 2004). His training also includes instruction from Maestre Gwylym on several period Masters and about 6 years of Olympic style fencing from various instructors. He currently lives in the Barony of SunDragon, Kingdom of Atenveldt (Phoenix, AZ).

Serena Lascelles

Serena Lascelles, an Elizabethan peer, has been contributing research and service to the SCA since joining in 1986. Her skills in Elizabethan calligraphy & tailoring, as well as her extensive research of legal documents (texts, design, scripts, decoration, sealing, etc.) led to her elevation to the Order of the Laurel in 1995, and further contributions of service in heraldry, scribal arts, and running lists led to her induction to the Order of the Pelican in 2004. She currently holds three herald's offices for Ansteorra, all of which deal with some aspect of legal administrivia. She is married to Robin of Gilwell, and they currently live in the Barony of the Steppes, Kingdom of Ansteorra (Dallas, TX).

Diane Rudin is a graduate student in legal history with a BA in History (course concentration: legal history) from the University of Texas at Arlington. Publication of one of her undergraduate papers is pending. She has been researching and writing about legal history for over 10 years.

Tivar Moondragon

Tivar Moondragon is a Gentleman Pensioner at the court of Queen Elizabeth. In the SCA he is the premier member of the Order of the White Scarf, was the Deputy Society Marshal for Rapier for ten years and oversaw (to one degree or another) the development of rapier fighting in many of the kingdoms of the SCA. He has also been rapier marshal for the Barony of the Stargate and for the Region, Principality and Kingdom of Ansteorra. He currently lives in the Barony of Bryn Gwlad, Ansteorra (Austin, TX).

Chris Zakes is a Registered Massage Therapist who started studying fencing in 1973, then switched to rapier fighting a couple of years later when he found the SCA.

Ld Walter Robin (Andy Borman) has been fencing in the SCA since '93. He began studying period rapier styles in 1999, creating the first complete online transcription of the Pallas Armata (www.pallasarmata.org), and receiving a Sable Thistle for "Period Rapier Study" in 2001. He also participates in seminars sponsored by the Midwest Historical Fencers' Project. He currently resides in the Canton of Glaslyn, Ansteorra (Denton, TX).
