As students of defence we all know we need to
work out to help us become better fencers. One of the things all
trainers recommend is to do a workout with a light set of weights
to tone and strengthen our muscles. However, many of us make the
excuse we don't have the weights to do such a workout. Yet as
fencers we all have a sword. This workout uses the sword we
already have to do a light weight workout.

This class will be an introduction to the
teachings of dall'Agocchie, a Bolognese sword teacher who taught
cut-and-thrust techniques in the tradition of Marozzo. You will
be shown a full complement of attacks and defenses that (when
used correctly) will allow you to play in the Sidesword
experiment and remain relatively effective. This class assumes
you have been playing for long enough to understand balance,
stance, and how to thrust.
This is a hands-on demonstration class. Bring

This class will present some of the history
and lineage of Destreza, the Spanish art of fencing. It will
highlight some notable Spanish figures in the system and give
some background on each of them. The second and more extensive
part of the class will present the Spanish system from a
theoretical standpoint with demonstrations of techniques to
reinforce the understanding of the system. The system will be
contrasted against the Italian rapier tradition and common
misconceptions will be addressed. Examples from texts that have

Most masters of defense in the 14th-16th
centuries taught unarmed and dagger techniques as well as
swordwork. No distinction was drawn between the methods; it was
assumed that all three types of techniques might come into play
in any given fight. This course is an introduction to dagger and
grappling techniques taught by Italian and German masters.
Participants will be exposed to a variety of basic concepts and
techniques, on which they can build in further studies.
Hands on. Participants should expect to be
VERY close to each other during some of the drills. A dagger
waster or similar practice tool is necessary. Standard SCA armor
should be brought to the class, as it may be useful for some of
the dagger work. Rapiers will not be needed.

George Silver described certain universal
principles of fencing in his book 'Paradoxes of Defence.' At the
heart of his system are his 'true times,' which can be summarized
as the need to create a threat in attack, before creating a
target. This is taught in modern fencing as "extend before you
lunge." But while true times are universal, they are even more
important in the pass-based early fencing, of which Silver was
one of the last proponents. The pass, being a slower foot
movement, accentuates the difference in speed between the hand
and the foot. Most of the subtlety of medieval fencing comes from
the intelligent use of this difference in speed, which might
otherwise be seen as a problem. This class will examine the four
true times, using Silver's basket hilted "short" sword, but the
concepts are applicable to all medieval, and most Renaissance,
combat systems.

armor and a sword - preferably a good sidesword (or basket

In this lecture-based two-hour class, which
includes some demonstrations, we identify aspects of the mind of
the winning fighter and some approaches that you can use to
become a more effective tournament fighter. The class information
includes:
• Colonel John Boyd's OODA Loop Cycle that he developed to
help train fighter pilots
• Seven specific skills that you should use in a fight, and
how to develop those skills
• Seven specific things that you should never do in a fight
and how to avoid them
• The Combat Mind and how to develop it.
The class consists of three instructors, Brendan, Modius, and
Miguel, who all provide augmentations and enhancements to the
general course outline. Combined, the instructors have won over
200 tournaments, including 11 Queens Champion tournaments, 13
multi-kingdom tournaments, and 2 Crown tournaments.
Lecture/Demonstration. Anyone is welcome.
Although the concepts are simple, students with previous fighting
experience (not necessarily rapier) are likely to get the most
from the class. We will be distributing a summary, but recommend
that serious students bring paper and a pen.

explored in Part I, the class will focus intensively on the
application of Fiore's segno principles using the medieval
longsword. We will cover Fiore's 12 core poste, principles of
striking, cutting & thrusting, and some elements of defense.
In the last forty minutes students will have the chance to apply
the principles under combat condition provided that they are in
requisite armour (ie, armed for sidesword encounters per
Ansteorran rules).
Bring a medieval long- or bastard sword in

The combative use of the cape, or cloak, is
certainly to be numbered among the most distinctive, and least
understood of late period fighting techniques. It was a
predominantly Italian phenomenon, and an extensive literature on
its use survives among the Italian fencing treatises of the 16th
and 17th centuries. By practicing the techniques described in a
number of these we will derive common themes on the historically
accurate and effective use of the sword and cloak.
Class includes lecture and full-contact
drills. Students must be authorized rapier fighters with at least
an intermediate degree of experience with the single sword.
Familiarity with basic Italian fencing theory and terminology is
helpful, but not essential. Students will need to bring complete
rapier armor, as well as a sword (schlaeger or heavier) and cape
or cape-like object (e.g. trench-coat). NOTE: the bigger and
heavier the cape, the better—a half-circle of heavy fabric
of waist length AT A MINIMUM, up to a full floor-length
cloak.

Countering the popular mythologies about
dueling that have resulted from people watching too many
“Three Musketeers” movies, this lecture class will be
an outline of the history of dueling in England, from its Norman
importation as a judicial proceeding through its degeneration in
the Renaissance into “private revenge” as promulgated
by the importation of Continental, especially Italian,
philosophies of honor. Among the issues to be discussed are: why
dueling, either judicial or extrajudicial, was never as popular
in England as it was on the Continent; the opposition of the
Church to dueling, even judicial dueling; how English law could
approve of judicial dueling and consider “private
revenge” to be affray or murder; the influence of foreign
philosophies; what legal and social measures were recommended for
suppressing illegal dueling; and the ultimate fate in law of
judicial and extrajudicial dueling. Portions of this lecture are
based on the instructor's paper (publication pending),
"“Revenge Belongeth to the Magistrate”: Dueling and
the Law in the Reign of James I of England", winner of the
undergraduate division of the 2002 E.C. Barksdale Essays in
History contest, sponsored by the Omicron Kappa chapter
(University of Texas at Arlington) of Phi Alpha Theta, the
national history honor society. (As this class presents

Salvatore Fabris was a talented and learned
middle-class individual who earned his way to fame, fortune and
perhaps even knighthood through excellence in his science: the
science of the rapier. Fabris' scientific approach to the rapier
gives us a true, complete martial art system, and in order to
become proficient in it, one must equally master the techniques
and understand the theory and the raison d'etre in their precise
tactical context. The Scienza is the most complete manual because
of its length (260+ pages), the accuracy and originality of its
illustrations. This class will discuss the very basics of this
system and drill to learn and practice these basics to give a
basis for future study.

be more confident and effective while teaching. Teaching is an
important part of the success of the SCA, we are encouraged to

focus on how to transfer the knowledge to another. This class
will help fill that void. We will go over such topics as how most
people learn, how to give a critique so that others will be
encouraged rather than run off, how best to present the material
and different grouping techniques. This class will end with a
round table style discussion about teaching and what fears some
new teachers face.

care and feeding of a Cadet (or Don), expectations and
responsibilities, what it means to be a “Cadet.” The

This being a class in a different and
coherent way of looking at the techniques of deception or fooling
your opponent during a bout. Concepts from prestidigitation
(stage magic) as well as human perception will be used to look at
old and new techniques in different ways. There will also be time
for your favorite “tricks” to share with others.
This is a class for any level of rapier

The key to good fencing and good dancing is
balance, and the ability to move your feet without tripping on
them. This class is for fencers and non-fencers, and contains
instruction and excercises to improve the student's balance and
footing. We will cover basic warm up excercises, posture
improvement techniques, flexibility, movement basics, and some of
the more common mistakes that can lead to injury. Armor is not
required, but can be analyzed with the student for potential gaps
in coverage or movement restriction issues caused by the
armor.
This is a physical class, bring water.
Students will be required to be very active. No skirts please (so
that stance may be viewed). Loose fitting pants and good shoes
(need traction) are a must.

Not a "hands-on" class on fighting a specific
style, weapon combination, etc. This a class on looking at how
and why we do the things we do, and offering a different outlook.
"Practical demonstrations" are kept to the minimum as the focus
is more on the mental than the physical. Views on drills,
patterns, feints, the unconscious and the conscious mind during
combat are just some of the topics presented.
No prerequisites. Beginner - Advanced are
welcome. However, a basic experience in fighting Rapier is
recommended.

The cinquedea was a very popular dagger in
northern Italy from the mid 15th to the mid 16th century. Very
little is known about its use other than what can be inferred
from its stature and the fencing of the period. The Cinquedea can
be found from a blade length of 8 inches to a sword length blade
of 30 inches but is most commonly found in the 12-18 inch range.
The class will focus on a derived system of combat for this
weapon based upon period teaching both before and after the
period of use of this weapon This is a hands-on course designed
to introduce the student to this unique and devastating weapon of
self defense. Training blades will be provided as will some
padded weapons for actual combat.

What Is Field Heraldry: Field heralds are a
walking PA system. On the field of combat, the Herald calls the
combatants to the field, announces who will fight whom, and then
who has won, as well as making any tangential announcements that
may be needed. The other main duty of a field herald is hourly
announcements and morning wake up call. These are easy to do and
greatly appreciated if you want to volunteer at an event. Nothing
special is required for this class, beyond a writing tool and
something to write on.

to teach new fighters, with new being interpreted as “new
